מאז 1983 נחשבת גניבת השעונים לאחת הפריצות הגדולות בתולדות המדינה. המשטרה הודיעה כי הצליחה לפענח את הפרשה מאחוריה עומד אחד מגדולי הפורצים בשנות ה-70', נעמן לידור (דילר). על הפענוח פורסם לראשונה בעיתון "כלכליסט"

In the early afternoon of Friday, April 15 1983, Jerusalem’s LA Mayer Museum for Islamic Art as usual closed early for the Sabbath. The fortress-like pink stone building, 100 metres from Israel’s presidential residence, would re-open the next day. Guards on night duty extinguished the lights in the galleries before settling down to chat, read and sleep. After an undisturbed night, they made their rounds before ending their shift by opening the large gallery at the rear of the museum, displaying Sir David Salomons’s collection of antique watches. Inside there was chaos.

An elegant gold and rock-crystal pocket watch, made by Abraham Louis Breguet for Marie Antoinette, has been retrieved a quarter of a century after it was stolen along with 39 other priceless timepieces from a Jerusalem museum.

But that was its fate after an agile thief lifted it and others from a Jerusalem museum in 1983 and hid the evidence by taking them apart, wrapping them up and stashing them around the globe. The trail lay cold for two decades, until the burglar made a deathbed confession to his wife. In 2006, she tried to sell some of the watches back to the museum; administrators sent the police. This summer, the spectacular Marie Antoinette watch, valued at about $30 million, will be the star of a show in Jerusalem. Timepieces from a priceless collection stolen from a Jerusalem museum were discovered in French bank vaults, police said Wednesday, more than two decades after the heist.

The 43 watches and clocks will return to Israel, where they will join dozens of others from the collection found two years ago, police said Wednesday, reuniting most of the collection of 106 rare artifacts. The 1983 theft from the L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art was the costliest heist in Israel's history.
